Team USA captain Juli Inkster was fast to pay tribute to both teams after seeing the Solheim Cup is snatched by Team Europe in the Americans’ palms in spectacular fashion at Gleneagles.
After a see-saw collection of 12 singles matches on the last day, everything came down to the final putt on the last green, with Suzann Pettersen holing a birdie putt to edge outside Marina Alex 1up and clinch a 14.5-13.5 win for Europe.
“We watched a lot of great games on the market,” said Inkster. “But you know everything, they just played a little better than us. But as you understand that’s the way it belongs in golf.
“We had a terrific time. We had six rookies out there who played great. I think they all got half of a time or at least a point. And I couldn’t ask any one of those women, the way they grinded during that weather.
“They just played with a half a point . However, it’s wonderful for women’s golf and I’m really proud of my group. I am really proud to be able to represent the USA.
“And you know what, Suzann made a excellent putt. And you know the Solheim Cup doesn’t return to that putt, but it was left by her now. Roll which putt in and to go right ahead, it is impressive. That’s why she is Suzann.”
Inkster considers the competition in Scotland this week’s grade can allow the women’s game and the players command new respect.
“I feel a great deal of individuals underestimate women’s golf plus they don’t give it the credit that we deserve,” she said. “But these girls are athletes. They are excellent at what they do. And it really irks me the way because I do not think these girls should take a back seat to 28, we constantly must take a back seat.
“Not their golfing, but the way that they handled themselves and who they are. We must grind for everything we do.”
Inkster was quick to match her group after a number of these were in tears after moving so close to retaining the trophy.
“We had a few tears. And I said it’s fine. Nevertheless, the most important thing is we had a fantastic week, and now you know everything, the Europeans played good. And we’re likely to have a terrific celebration.
“But the sun’s going to come up tomorrow. This will give you guys fire and fuel for the following two years to operate to be to attempt to find this cup backagain.
“So, I simply said, hold up your heads because you should not be disappointed. That the LPGA was represented by you. You represented the USA and [with] good sportsmanship and ethics.”
Inkster had been captaining that the USA team for another time after leading them to success at 2015 and 2017, however she confirmed she won’t be back accountable in Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio at 2021.
“I’m 2-1, I think I will stop while I am ahead,” she explained.
“I’m really happy where I’m at. I’ve had the honor to do this three times and it’s been an honor. It’s not really about the wins and losses; it’s all about the memories along with the camaraderie.”
